With cold winter weather on your doorstep, it is important to resist the temptation to hibernate inside with your kids until spring. With the arrival of winter comes plenty of fun outdoor activities that can turn a cold January day into a memorable adventure for parents and kids alike. 1. Toddlers have the same internal body temperature as adults, so there is no need to overdress them. The first layer should be non-cotton thermal underwear that is snug fitting to the body. Otherwise, silk underwear or performance synthetic long underwear are also good options. Follow-up with a fleece layer, sweater or vest that is soft and non-irritating. Consider a turtleneck on colder days for added protection.
2. Next, you’ll want to put a warm layer of socks made of wool or synthetic fibers. Avoid really thick socks that will cause discomfort or restrict your child’s toes from wiggling. Make sure the socks extend up above the calf so their snow boots do not chafe their skin.
3. To protect their lower half, select a good quality pair of insulated, waterproof, adjustable snow bibs which will warm their torso and will prevent snow from creeping under their jacket. Check for extra padding on the bottom and knees for added comfort while playing. Since bibs are a little more work to get on and off, you’ll want to plan additional time for bathroom breaks and undressing. 4. When selecting a jacket or toddler2-piece snowsuit, thicker is not necessarily better- especially for a small child who may have difficulty walking in a bulky set. The primary goal is to insulate your toddler from the elements by creating a barrier against all wind, snow, and water. 5. The last line of defense is a good fitting fleece hat that covers the ears and stays on your child’s head. While some younger children may resist wearing one, make sure they know it is non-negotiable. Hats help regulate body temperature by not allowing heat to escape through the head, thus reducing the risk of hypothermia or frostbite. Fleece-Lined waterproof mittens will keep their little fingers toasty warm and are recommended for smaller hands that may have a difficult time with gloves.
